Pros

location is good low stress Blacksburg is a special place to live. Nice mountains and streams. Nice people. Good schools. Etc.

Cons

bureaucracy is not so good low pay There is a lot of crap work to be done from forms to certifications and the like. This gives you less time for teaching and research. The pay is lower than comparable schools and industry. Working here as a professor is a choice of lifestyle over pay. Staff are under valued and appreciated and there are a lot of under performs with state mentality. The very good ones are over worked. So, tough on staff.

Pros

The professors are great. They are very flexible with your schedules. Virginia Tech has a beautiful campus. I would recommend Virginia Tech to anyone looking to work in academia.

Cons

There really are not any downsides to working for Virginia Tech. If you like a big city, the location will not be your favorite. However, as far as the actual employee, employer relationship goes, this is a great place.

Pros

Great professors, campus, class options, food, and resources. I loved going to college here. The people were great to work with. There are thousands of learning and research opportunities that help students to expand their minds and prospects for the future.

Cons

Some of the downsides are that many classes are restricted by major. This makes it difficult for students who want to change majors to try out different classes to see what their interests are. I have changed majors a few times and I feel that this process would have been easier if I could have take some of the classes that are major restricted.
