      Nice research environment in the DC metropolitan area

      Pros

      Good research environment Good career opportunities Nice office in the city Research on the fields of power system, renewable energy, bio bioinformatic etc. are conducted in Virginia Tech Research Center (VTRC) situated in Arlington.

      Cons

      Demanding course works Expensive housing for Arlington research center The most acute downside is the lack of sufficient courses. In the norther Virginia campus the number of offered courses are very limited compared to main campus in Blacksburg.

      The University is good, however, under current funding rate, a academic research job is not easy.

      Pros

      1) Nice campus: including good sport facilities, nice building, good football team, and great environment. 2) Comprehensive and good engineering school.

      Cons

      No well established medical school. Library is too small for such a university. Don't support GreenCard application for international post-doc researcher.

      Pros

      Excellent Benefits, OT has to be approved; not SOP, excellent training opportunities, and one class free per semester if accepted into the University. Excellent vacation and PTO program.

      Cons

      University will shut down classes due to foul weather; let the faulty and executive management stay home. But force administrative (secretaries, etc) drive in inclement weather even if you are non-essential. I worked a position that had the level of responsibility of an executive assistant but the title and pay did not match. They also have the habit of hiring student wives vs. promoting locals all ready experience and wanting to move up. New employees get paid the same or more than veterans.
