So here are some cons: - While bonuses are great, this is their excuse to not give anyone raises. If you are planning to work here, be sure to negotiate your salary early on as that might be your own wage until they provide the typical "cost of living wage" or they feel "nice" enough to provide a salary raise. - No one gets fired even if you are a really bad boss or not nice to your employees. I've heard of people being retaliated on and even being treated poorly by their managers and no one gets fired. Everyone continues to turn a blind eye to management even if they do poorly because for some reason, that's better to do than provide a safe and growing environment for their employees. - There is no such thing as a good promotion. If you get a promotion, congratulations, its just a title change, a small raise but nothing else changes. You don't really move up. You just stay in the exact same hierarchy. - The higher ups refuse to address anything that involves racism to their internal teams and I believe its due to their response to BLM in the summer. They sent out a public statement but made no statement internally and were called out for it. Now instead of really trying, they've decided to make no statement even though recently, Asian Americans are being hurt in the bay area and last I checked, we are a manga and anime publisher. Our community and employees is majority Asian and Asian American. Its truly unfortunate to see. I have respect to the employees who have made a DEI group that combats this behavior. Its hard to see that its basically management vs employees at this company.

Unfortunately, VIZ has a real bully culture that’s well-known in Japanese companies. It makes sense as a lot of VIZ employees are Japanese. You’ll experience what’s called “power harassment” in Japan where you’ll get called out for anything in front of others in meetings. This is a fear tactic in the Japanese work culture to try and deter out-of-the-box thinking in favor of going with anything a boss or long-time VIZ employee says. I wish HR would try to combat bullying in VIZ, but that doesn’t seem like it’ll happen. If you want to be in a growth/team culture, VIZ isn’t the place. If you’re willing to stay at VIZ for 20 years so you can then become a senior employee to then talk down to new people, by all means you’ll feel at home here.
