Pros

Don't have to be terribly smart to stay employed. Some co-workers do actually care about you. Used to be a very secure and stable company.

Cons

Inefficient practices and non-profit producing departments kept around due to personal loyalties and not sound business decisions. Severely incompetent people in positions of authority and responsible for strategic planning.

Pros

Vulcan has an above average benefits package, and the company is stable with few layoffs. They have made strides in making the workplace more fair towards women and minorities. They match charitable contributions, and the rank-and-file employees are very loyal and dedicated to the company, particularly the ones that have been there for many years.

Cons

Benefits are being quickly changed to make them just average, rather than above average. HR seems to spend a lot of time finding ways to keep salaries down. If a female employee doesn't play by the right 'Southern Belle' rules, she may as well leave, because there will be no promotions or decent raises. Most importantly, bad middle managers are protected at the expense of their direct reports. Upper management seems to be more concerned with how things look, than how they actually are.

Pros

Good benefits and good working conditions. They are very understanding about personal/medical situations that might affect attendance. The company is very conservative, but they don't make a lot of mistakes, either. Acquisitions, changes in business are well thought out.

Cons

It is had to advance one's career at Vulcan, There is a great deal of nepotism in management, and lots of poor mid-level managers. If you don't get a promotion early in your career you probably won't get one at all. One particular department was so bad they couldn't fill jobs internally. Yet the manager was allowed to sustain a hostile work environment despite repeated complaints from subordinates.
