WD - Irvine

Pros

WD has been trying to provide competitive benefits compared to other tech comps like Facebook and Google. Its an aggressive environment with fairly professional people working there. Its located in a nice corporate park and in the center of Irvine for easy access to SNA. Company invests in training which is great. It would be a family environment if you are placed with the right team.

Cons

Each department have their own rules and working hours. Some people are promoted because they are friends with the upper management. It's hard to advance in this large company. The HR department doesn't do much to protect your rights and makes a lot of mistakes on your benefits. The hours can be harsh and some bosses don't care if you have a family. This place can take a while to get used to like up a year to be comfortable. It's defiantly not for the weak heart and if you are a type A you will like it here.

Solid company that values execution over innovation

Pros

WD places a premium on tactical execution and the company is generally very good at this. Programs are monitored very closely and usually delivered in a very timely manner. Compensation is usually very competitive making it easier for managers to attract and retain good talent. Personnel are generally very adept at overcoming obstacles. There is a high degree of solidarity between team members when facing challenges.

Cons

The company struggles to produce truly innovative products and features, typically playing it safe with "me too" features. The culture also can be highly adversarial which typically has a very stifling effect on innovation because innovation involves becoming good at failing gracefully and learning from and building on those failures. Finger pointing kills this necessary innovation feedback loop. Innovation also requires a solid process pipeline from ideation all the way through to customer delivery and support. There is little institutional knowledge and support of what this is actually supposed to look like.
