Pros

Great job with some of the best technology you will ever work with. Many of the best engineers across many disciplines have made WDC their home. Magnetic, mechanical, electrical, IC design and firmware engineers can all find homes here. It can be a great job if you are an engineer.

Cons

Long one of the biggest high tech employers in Orange County, the attitude towards its employees does not reflect the global economy. This is a place with a very Old School management style that has no place for people who are "not like us". Sadly, a major part of that style includes the notion that lies and miss-truths are a normal part of doing business. "Management by Crisis" is der rigueur. There is no future planning that I can see, only jumping from one emergency to another. Equipment is bought that way, people are hired that way. Because of this, too many shortcuts are accepted along the way. Crises are often manufactured because that is the only way your team/group/division will get the resources it needs. Industry experts are hired for their knowledge and Rolodex, then siloed and ignored. The strategy is to hire people who understand an industry, business relationship or technology so that your company can excel. However, the next step is forgotten as nobody listens to their advice.

Abusive Company Culture

Pros

Large public company - looks good on a resume if you can survive

Cons

Management promotes workaholic reputation as if it is a badge of honor. Working to all hours of the evening and sending emails past midnight, through weekends, during vacations, etc. is viewed as the minimum requirement. Abusive management tactics are overlooked as long as that manager gives their all to the company. I have personally viewed multiple instances of reprehensible management behavior in public settings that could and should be reported as employee abuse. Many colleagues have escaped this company over the past 12 months and none have regretted their departure.

Pros

Strong technology company with good values. Fun place to work for a process engineer - the read/write head fabrication is challenging and involves complex integration. Most of the decision making is data driven.

Cons

Few opportunities to grow - the company is full of long time employees (from IBM days) making it difficult for a new engineer to grow. Lacks a strong training department or rotation policy to expand technical skills.
