Pros

Absolutely NONE..the most unprofessional, unsafe, non structured place I have ever worked at. DO YOURSELF A FAVOR AND DO NOT APPLY TO THIS COMPANY! You will be sorry, mark my word! Biggest 3-ring circus I've ever encountered!

Cons

I worked for another railroad, (a Class I) for 10yrs so I consider myself very knowledgeable in what I do- I don't know how some of the other shortline carriers operate, but Watco mgmt is terrible and they care NOTHING about safety! This place was a joke..VERY unsafe, no structure, no schedules as to when we were to show up for work until 10:30pm the night before via EMAIL expecting us to be there at 5am that next a.m. And when I finally had had enough & went to HR with the issues, they basically handed me off to the superintendent of the particular railroad I was working for- who then called and tried to chew ME out saying I was "causing problems by reaching out to HR and not going to my Trainmaster"...uh, I HAD been going to my TM for a week trying to ask questions, get answers, etc, to which he would NEVER respond or get in touch with me. Then he asked "well..what do u want me to do? " and I politely told him "put me somewhere else. ANYWHERE else. All of the Watco terminals can't be THIS poorly managed..I'll go anywhere, but I'm not staying at this particular one." And he basically said nope. No can do. You haven't been out here long enough to prove yourself to me or anyone else..You need to submit a resignation letter to the Trainmaster. I said it before and I will say it again...SAVE YOURSELF THE HASSLE. Look elsewhere for a job! You will 1) LIVE another day to tell about it, and 2) be much happier and better off!

Pros

This company offers anyone who is willing the opportunity to have the career of their dreams. I have never seen a place where you are in control of your own destiny and the management team actually helps you get there. No other company in Pittsburg, KS offers that! Heck even some bigger city jobs don't offer that. At Watco, people are not just a number, and great amounts of time and effort are made by the management team to ensure everyone is afforded the same opportunities. It is up to you to engage management. It is a 2-way street.

Cons

Fellow team members think because of tenure, not effort, they should automatically be promoted and when someone with less tenure comes in and strives to learn and wants a career, and stretches their skill sets, they are belittled along with management when promoted. Small town drama, gossip and jealousy in Pittsburg. All this whining about who gets promoted and who doesn't, with speculation that everyone knows is a lie (eg. If you read one of the terrible management bashes it talks about management's reaction to glass door) If you really think what you write on glass door has anything to do with decisions that are made in any company, you are more ignorant than your comments make you out to be. Stay at home at watch soap operas, because you apparently think that is how real life is.

Pros

The only thing you'd get fired for is not showing up/late show Build some skills... for a better job

Cons

Nearly everything else: Pay, just barely livable. Good luck getting paid what you're worth. Best advice is to become buddies with someone in management, and try to make time, hopefully the QC department won't look too hard at whatever crappy repair you were forced to put on a car. Management, horrible. Almost be better off with no management, nearly every manager I've seen is either completely out of touch, condescends to you like a child, is an absolute hypocrite, or an outright liar. If the managers at the top would start listening to the employees, rather than the old Millenium Rail managers (half the problem right there), this company would start to make some progress in reducing their turnover. The equipment... (Ha, ha, ha, I made a joke!) If the equipment isn't broke, or outdated, they don't have it, and would rather prefer if they didn't have to spend any money on a worthwhile investment. The cars, oh dear God. Sometimes they just need to need to learn to say "No." They want Cadillac repairs on rust bucket cars, that are one more major repair away from the scrapper, then the cars they HAVE to do a Cadillac job on, they completely biff it, or don't bill them hard enough for the time. "Oh, well, 'shop X' in 'Zebratown, Antarctica' doesn't have any trouble making time on these cars." (The other shops cheat, and we know this. That's why you guys get hit when a customer comes to look at a car, and isn't happy with a wreck repair, or paint/lining jobs, etc.) The turnover rate... Jeziz. I didn't really talk to too many people that hadn't been there for a minimum of at least 3 months. By the time they (IF they) hit the 3-month mark, nearly all of them had had it up to the hilt with the company. I've never seen a place go through so many employees as this place. It's nearly an entire crew worth of turnovers, in a year or two's time frame, sometimes less depending on the season and management's incompetence at that period in time. Safety, the polar opposite of production. You guys continue to slash hours, and continue to take on less than worthwhile/difficult programs/cars, don't invest much into the equipment, and what has it gotten you? Crappy repairs, or injuries. 'Nuff said.
