Pros

I had lots of flexibility in terms of controlling both my schedule and content topics. I was also largely able to work from home. In addition to my salary I was able to leverage my own website and generate increased traffic through references and links on WebMD. Overall the staff is supportive, the salary is competitive and the perks are good. If you have a medical or science background and are seeking an excellent source of additional revenues, check out WebMD. The company aims are well intentioned and promote the sharing of accurate medical knowledge with the public. . .

Cons

Unfortunately, the current economic downturn is affecting WebMD, and some cutbacks are under way.

Pros

WebMD Health is a name that is recognized by many people in the general public, which is unusual for a company that is involved in healthcare education and communications. This is largely due to the widespread advertising campaign used to drive traffic to its family of websites, which are targeted to consumers (webmd.com) and to healthcare professionals (medscape.com; theheart.org, emedicine.com, etc). The opportunity to work in a company whose mission is to deliver high-quality healthcare information to patients as well as healthcare professionals is a rewarding one for those with strong interests in medicine, science, and/or public health.

Cons

Unfortunately, the amazing potential of this company is limited by poor communications between management and employees (ironic since the company specialized in communications) and by poor management in general. The organiziation somehow manages to succeed despite the poor management -- likely because there are many talented individuals working there. To succeed and be happy working at WebMD, an employee must be self-motivated and be able to find satisfaction in his or her work without expecting to receive any sort of praise from their managers (there are a few exceptions to this, of course). Often, the only type of feedback received is negative in nature.

Pros

There are a variety of technical and business opportunities to pursue across the WebMD corporation, so it's hard for your career to stagnate. They have a dedication to their employees that is rare in the high-turnover world of IT which is shown in their appreciation events, bonuses, regular review process, the rarity of layoffs and the personal concern of management. At WebMD Health there are plenty of places to pitch in and make a difference, your work will show up in front of customers in a matter of weeks or months which is a nice change from my experience with other large IT organizations.

Cons

The training opportunities are a bit lacking compared to other large IT shops for which I've worked.
