Pros

This is my first trucking job. I have been here for over 5 years as a solo, over the road / long haul, flatbed truck driver. Within the 1st 2 years, I went through all 48 contiguous United States. What I like most about the company is the sheer amount of variety in the freight you get as a long haul flatbed driver, and the routes they put you on. You don't stay in one region of the country for long, they send you all over the map. There are many times I remember where I began a week at the Atlantic coast and ended at the Pacific coast. I get assigned a brand new truck every 2 years or so. Western Express is pretty fast paced and they expect you to be competent, but there is also leniency at the company, which allows rookie drivers who are often bound to make some mistakes, get on their feet. At the same time, I would imagine that the more experienced flatbed drivers stay for the variety of freight. That's what makes it more fun than most other flatbed trucking jobs, which are just highly repetitive "jobs" with the same freight, over and over again. You will earn a very good paycheck as a long haul flatbed driver if you put the effort in and are vigilant, but you have to plan ahead and work. That's what a truck driver is supposed to do.

Cons

One of the few cons is that the load securement people at Nashville give you a bare minimum of cargo securement items, when there are many loads you will encounter that could use more securement. I solved this problem by picking up a few more items over the road, then letting my dispatcher know so I can get reimbursed. No company is perfect, you just have to work around the little annoyances. Overall, Western Express is very simple. There's no political correctness, just "are you willing to do your job and get it done right and safely?" That's it, and I like that.

Pros

You get great miles if you're willing to run. They normally get you home when you ask. They provide an opportunity when other companies wouldn't they are a first class company.

Cons

Upkeep of some of the flatbed trailers leave something to be desired and they could pay you by the mile and load other than that no complaints.
