Pros

As most others have said, the majority of the people I work with are pleasant and competent. Trusted to 'get on with it' (manager dependent). A relatively honest environment - raising concerns is acceptable, though solutions (particularly where they require money) are not necessarily quick to follow. Some great benefits like Happy Fridays, Rec Days,

Cons

Bureaucracy around certain decision-making processes. Pay is generally on the low end. There's a lot of bloat in my area of the business that takes time away from our core responsibilities, making it harder to succeed. Whilst we're encouraged not to exceed our working hours and there's a lot of lip service paid to work/life balance, there are few tangible things done to address the root of the problem. Working arrangements have become less flexible for hybrid colleagues, though perhaps still more flexible than other publishers. Some key adjacent departments are underfunded, leading to stagnant practices and less capable candidates filling those roles, which in turn puts more pressure on my corner of the business. As with many publishers, there are a lot of outsourced roles which leads to lower quality communication and output vs when these roles were in-house.

Good Company Culture

Pros

I enjoyed my time working at Wiley. Company culture was good, esp for a large company. Upper management encouraged maintaining a healthy work-life balance, and that was reflected in a generous PTO policy. I believe the base # of PTO days was 18 when I started, plus 2 floating holidays, and the # of PTO days would increase depending on your # of years employed there. 100% remote work was also a huge plus.

Cons

As with most companies, salary increases were not stellar unless you were getting an actual promotion. Promotion cycles were only offered once per year, and in my experience, you had to apply for a position opening to secure a promotion - they weren't offered based on performance. They did have a merit-based bonus system, but the % you're eligible more is dictated not just by your own performance, but also by the company's overall performance for that year, so...if it wasn't a great year for the business, it wasn't a great year for bonuses.
