Pros

Stability. Get to help people become successful with their employment goals. Meet interesting customers.

Cons

No raises. No realistic opportunity for advancement. Upper management based in Madison and Milwaukee are out of touch and will treat you awfully when things go sideways. If you speak out, you will get a target on your back. They do not value great employees doing the grunt work in the field offices. They believe they are above the law. Customers can get violent, and Madison will not support you or value your safety.

Pros

Good managers/supervisors/lead workers/mentors. A lot of them have been there 10+ years and started as adjudicators. Advancement/reclass opportunities, transfers to other positions within the agency. Something new comes up every day. Helping claimants during a rough time in their lives. Excellent benefits and time off.

Cons

Training and new issue families are HARD. It's exhausting. Metrics are a stretch and sometimes it feels like pure luck to meet or miss them. Complex law and policy. Not everything that's generally understood is written into policy. Cranky claimants and employers, occasionally. Having to issue decisions that follow law and policy but that you dont personally agree with.
