Pros

The gym and cafe. Every other company in the area has those however, and this is not unique to Cree. The pay was okay.

Cons

Incompetent leadership. Management is like wolf in sheep's clothing. Smile in your face, and talk bad about you behind your back. Frequent inter-departmental backstabbing. No career development. Forget about it. Management doesn't care about you or your career growth. Pure evil. All leadership needs to be replaced. I have seen people do their best and still end up getting fired. They obviously don't care about their knowledge base going out the door. Oh well! The company will get bought out by GE or someone else big enough to invest. As for the culture, it is downright terrible. No work-life balance. Management ridicules you for not staying late when you have family plans. They don't care about you or your family life. If you set boundaries opposing their views, you will be PIP'd. As for the management, seriously, you need to grow up. You are snotty little children in 40-50 year old bodies. No one values you because you don't value them.

Pros

Some non-managers co-workers (not HR) are decent people to work with, I recommend they all improve their life path by finding another job ASAP.

Cons

- Innovation is squashed and ideas stolen by management for their own benefit - Absolutely no personal professional development, wastes your time to improve yourself - Management is beyond incompetent and needs extremely dumbed down presentations to understand anything (and you will work on presentations that have to be edited for them over and over until you want to die every single day) - You will be called out for issues due to management stupidity every day - No hope for promotion unless you "drink the poisonous Kool-aid" that is the most horrible company value list I have ever been subjected to for reviews (management breaks every rule on list and gets away with it) - Management will work you to death for long hours over problems that they caused by not listening to engineers on project development issues - LED manufacturing division works their cleanroom employees with no respect for work/life balance with very old and outdated (possibly unsafe) equipment - LED development employees seem competent and kind but are beyond overworked, don't work for SSL if you want have a life and spouse/kids - Zero relocation opportunities - Max raise is 2-3%/year regardless of performance - Office space conditions are over-crowded and labs are under-staffed and equipped - Managers thrive on keep employee spirits down by treating them like they are incompetent - Overall product quality is horrible due to managers cutting so many budget and certification steps on project giving all Cree products horrible quality not due to the engineers skills

Pros

The crystal growth department has some of the most intelligent, hard working, capable scientists, engineers, and R&D operators that I have ever worked with. I had the pleasure of working along side of them for 3 years. I absolutely loved what I was doing at Cree, in part because I was able to work with some great people. There are few things more gratifying than breaking down an experimental crystal that is virtually flawless. Don't get me wrong, the stress was incredible. However, those high pressures forges strong bonds of comradery. If you can make it at Cree for a few years, you can make it anywhere.

Cons

As with most companies, the disconnect between upper management and those that actually get the work done is breathtaking. My first manager at Cree was an absolute nightmare. This individual's only goal was to climb the corporate latter. She had no concept of what it meant to teach, nurture, guide, or shield those that she was managing. The worst part is that the company rewards her for it. Work/life balance is virtually nonexistent. Many individuals can't enjoy their PTO because they are constantly checking in on their projects during their time away. That's assuming that people actually take time off. Company culture encourages workers to blame problems on someone else, rather than working together to prevent that problem from happening again. My second manager, who was exceptional , once told me "make it someone else's problem". Not his brightest moment, but it was the best advice he could have given me at the time. Additionally, rather than guiding the scientists down the road of innovation, management had them focusing all of their time trying to squeeze 0.1% more out of production yields. In doing so, Cree was left behind as the world leader in SiC growth and development. The worst thing Cree ever did was make me doubt myself.
