Pros

Compared to organizations in the same field World Vision does a superb job of taking care of its staff and providing them with good benefits. The salaries outside the US, particularly when combined with expatriate benefits, are quite good. It is a good place to start your career but its probably best to move on to other places if you want to maintain professional standards and hone your skills to a level that others (outside World Vision) will find acceptable.

Cons

It is a Christian organization and at times it seems that unqualified Christians as opposed to qualified, professional non-Christians are hired. This is particularly true in the field offices and is also true of some of the people who rose through the ranks and are now in senior management positions. In addition, most of the people have not worked outside World Vision therefore you see the same ideas, same management styles and same development approaches being recycled over and over again. World Vision tends to separate itself from other organizations that work in the same field, therefore, you have fewer opportunities to network with non-World Vision people. Minimal sustainable impact in the field - this is unfortunate as World Vision has a ton of resources. These resources, combined with qualified people and good, progressive strategies can be put to better use.

Pros

Prayer and worship are great. Being able to help kids is great.

Cons

Many hide behind Christ and use him for advancing. Many don't truly know Jesus as they say. Many are rude and have no compassion for employees. Too many guidelines and rules placed on metrics versus being a ministry like they say. Ministry should be 1st above all things. Especially if it's know to be a "Christian Organization"

Pros

+ Strong mission and positive organizational culture. + Very committed and hard-working people, especially in the field offices. + Programs are directly implemented in poor communities. + Integrated model allows the organization to address different dimensions of poverty (eg. health, education, economic development). + World Vision has the scale and resources (financial and technical) to make a significant difference in each country where the organization works. + Sponsorship funding encourages personal connection with individual children.

Cons

- While child sponsorship is a positive financial model (providing a long-term and fairly predictable source of funding), it is not necessarily aligned with positive development objectives. In other words, there is a financial incentive for World Vision to continue relationships with sponsors for as long as possible, but the organization should not aspire to work in and with communities for as long as possible. What results is a lack of urgency, because the organization knows it has the financial support (child sponsorship) to work in a community for 10 to 20 years. In recent years, the organization has made positive efforts to diversify funding, which impose shorter time frames, more discipline, and better documentation of outcomes. However, as long as child sponsorship remains the main source of funding, World Vision will struggle with the misalignment of financial incentives and development results. - As the organization has grown larger, it has become more bureaucratic, efficiency-driven, and compliance-oriented.
