Pros

World Vision International CAN offer great experiences to staff if you work on its better functioning Global Center teams and affiliates (like Vision Fund and the Health team). WVI works in some of the hardest to reach communities around the world, and I am grateful to have had worked alongside some truly committed and passionate staff. WVI benefits and vacation policies are also excellent. Despite being extremely dissatisfied and essentially confounded by my bizarre experience at WVI, I am walking away with incredible friendships, and WVI opened the door to exceptional job opportunities, albeit external ones.

Cons

It is important to specify that many of my concerns are specific to my department, however the fact that Global senior management has allowed these patterns to continue for several years is also disconcerting. First, internal politics and favoritism have lead our department to the brink of implosion. If you aren't in the right inner circle, your job may be on the line despite your performance. Staff are afraid to advocate for themselves, even on matters of safety, for fear of being fired or of managers making their lives miserable. Incompetent responses to serious security incidents threaten staff morale and well-being, and lead me to pursue alternative job offers less than a year into my contract. Ultimately, I can't continue to work for a department where internal politics and vanity stand in the way of implementing even marginally successful programming and serving children. The children sponsored by WVI deserve better, and our department should at least be lead by adults.
