Pros

A first-hand insight to relief and development efforts around the globe. Great pay for all of us above "front line" donor services people. Not so much for those folks in the call centers.

Cons

Bloated at the top. Highly paid execs keep themselves relevant by constantly "re-organizing." Smug self-righteousness is pervasive throughout this religious organization.

Pros

Full of people who genuinely want to make the world better. Companionate and smart co-workers that challenge you to be the best at what you do. Pay is good for a non-profit. Allowed a work from home one day a week schedule. Had a once a month self-improvement time to take a class or work on improving your job training.

Cons

Unfortunately, It's very hard to get the right people in the right jobs because they can make more money somewhere else like Microsft or Google just down the street. This causes the wrong skill set for some jobs and it slows down the work. It also can take up to a year to get the right people in the job opening so it can double your work load. If they were able to do more of a work from home work plan they may be able to get higher qualified people in.

Pros

The positive impact to this world is unmeasurable. if you can make difference here then your life is making a difference worldwide. It doesn't get better than that.

Cons

Outdated technology in the past but that has changed dramatically. Inter departmental business groups not collaborating and lots of redundancy and data silos. This is also radically changing. This (the US support office) is a different organization than it was just a few years ago. The international office seems to still be operating much the same as before however with archaic technologies and disfunction in leadership.

Your advice is spot on - we do believe the some of the best ideas for efficiency, simplification and improvement come from staff doing the work. We need everyone's best and this year we are strengthening our focus on staff involvement and supporting managers to be their best in leading staff.
