No real business strategy

Pros

Some business units have a very “chase the bonus” spirit that can sometimes reward you with a little extra payout. Once you eventually reach full vestment in the ESOP it becomes a decent nest egg.

Cons

Senior management is seemingly “riding the automation wave” and not coming up with new strategies. Even with decent incentives, talent retention seems to be a struggle as several in management refuse to adapt to an ever changing industry. Massive lack of training. Expected to learn on the job. Most people with years of experience are burned out and some are completely unprofessional with their approach to mentorship.

Pros

The strength of WM’s franchise office model and end-market diversity is also its downfall under a rather silo’d leadership organization and lack of cohesive business strategy from the top. An interesting franchise engineering firm model, where each office grows or falls on its own merits but has an esop kicker at year-end. Outsourcing of engineering resources to other national office franchises does occur to keep billable hours above satisfactory allowance.

Cons

The strength of WM’s franchise office model and end-market diversity is also its downfall under a rather segmented leadership organization and lack of cohesive business strategy from the top. An interesting franchise engineering firm model, where each office grows or falls on its own merits but has an esop kicker at year-end. Has a ways to go if the company wants to be an integrated operating company from our individual staff perspectives. Many franchise offices that are weaker in professional engineering services end up serving as basic on-site staffing agencies for end-clients which does pay the bills if the talent wants that type of career. No single company culture as there are over 30 franchise offices with their own manager. Outsourcing of engineering resources to other national office franchises does occur to keep billable hours above satisfactory allowance.

We value all employees’ opinions and appreciate feedback in order to improve the way in which we work and meet our clients’ needs. We know with a company of over 500 we will have a wide variety of opinions, experiences, and perspectives—although we may disagree with this particular assessment of our company and strength of the business model, we value this and it makes our culture stronger when we listen to all perspectives. We have a culture of continuous improvement and do have both corporate and business unit-centric strategic plans that speak to our long-term future. WM is always looking for ways to improve, and leadership is actively working with all of the managers and staff to review our current strategies, as well as developing and implementing continuous 5-year strategic plans both at the business unit and company level. As an employee-owned company, WM is extremely proud of our business model and past success. We are very confident that our leadership and all of our employee shareholders will continue to evolve with our growth, collaborate together to serve our customers, and continue to enable excellence through our delivery of engineering services and manufactured goods.
