Kleinfelder Project Professional Ajay Sharma recently presented “Unlocking Insights: Harnessing OCR for Lead Service Line Inventories” at the New England Water Works Association (NEWWA) & New England Water Environment Association (NEWEA) Joint Information Technology & Asset Management Fair. “As many of us in the industry are aware, the EPA has amended the original 1991 Lead and Copper Rules, now called the Lead and Copper Rule Revisions, and are now mandating that all community water systems in the country submit a Lead Service Line Inventory (LSLI) to identify and replace lead within their systems,” Ajay said. “Optical Character Recognition (OCR) powered by Artificial Intelligence (AI), can streamline the foundational steps essential for creating a comprehensive LSLI by facilitating the extraction of vital information from various sources and records. As the first step in identifying lead service lines, OCR powered by AI can act as a catalyst for progress in addressing lead in drinking water. “Shoutout to Kleinfelder's dedication to fostering innovation and pushing the boundaries of what’s possible in our field. Our collective efforts to address the challenges posed by these inventory requirements and impending improvements forthcoming to the LCRR demonstrates our commitment to being at the forefront of positive change.”
