Celebrating Our Barbara’s Friends Scholarship Recipients 🎓💙 We’re proud to announce that three incredible childhood cancer survivors—Caliah Russell (Oasis High), Luis Machado (Mariner High), and Cali Trepkowski (Fort Myers High)—have each been awarded a full-ride Barbara’s Friends–Lexington Country Club Scholarship through the Lee Health Foundation! Caliah, now 14 years cancer-free, will be pursuing Hospitality Management and Tourism at the University of Central Florida. Her journey began at Golisano Children’s Hospital, where Barbara’s Friends supported her and her family during her two-and-a-half-year treatment for leukemia. This scholarship program, now in its fifth year, honors students treated for cancer or sickle cell disease at Golisano Children’s Hospital and is made possible through the legacy of Barbara’s Friends founder Frank Haskell. It reflects the resilience, determination, and bright futures of the young people we’re privileged to support. We are so inspired by these students’ strength and excited to see what they achieve next!
During a recent Becker's Healthcare webinar sponsored by LeanTaaS, Valeria Campbell, MSN, RN, director of clinical services and clinical research, Regional Cancer Center, Lee Health Cancer Institute, shared how patient assignment technology is streamlining operations, eliminating manual staffing practices and generating high nurse satisfaction through balanced assignments. Four key takeaways were: 1. Unpredictable patient schedules create operational and nursing challenges. 2. iQueue for Infusion Centers balances patient schedules and optimizes resource utilization. 3. Nursing leadership now has clear visibility into patient flow and staff productivity. 4. AI-powered technology has transformed infusion center operations. Read article for details.
Honoring 28 Years of Dedication Frank Haskell and his late wife Betty have been advocating for kids with cancer in Southwest Florida since 1995, just a few days after their daughter Barbara died of cancer. As a result, over $20 million has been raised for Barbara’s Friends, and more than 10,000 children with cancer and blood disorders have been helped. To honor Frank’s dedication, his daughter Nancy surprised him by helping name the Total Immersion Room at the Naples Pediatric Hematology Oncology Clinic in honor of the Haskell Family. The total immersion room is a one-of-a-kind space and the first in the country to offer children getting chemotherapy a virtual reality experience without the VR headset. The clinic, which has seen more than 1,100 patients and is open five days a week, celebrated its first anniversary on April 8!
Lee Health expanding to keep up with Cape Coral's growth
Lee Health Golisano Children's Hospital of Southwest Florida is home to two of our most paw-sitive employees. Meet Dorian and Lemon, GCH's facility dogs! These pups work inside the hospital and provide services to patients and families in multiple units. Unlike other dogs you may see in our facilities, Dorian and Lemon aren't therapy dogs—they work as employees of the Lee Health system. They act as distractions for patients and families who may experience discomfort and also act as teaching tools. Both Dorian and Lemon can demonstrate imaging to patients who may be reluctant to get on the table or who are unsure about what comes next. Their lovable faces make them a perfect match for patients and families in need! Want to learn more about these fluffs? News Release: Healthgrades ranks all four adult acute hospitals at Lee Health among top 100 in U.S. Having all four in the top 100 list means Lee Health hospitals are in the top 2% percent nationwide. What is Healthgrades all about? Healthgrades evaluates performance of 4,500 hospitals in the U.S. based on Medicare inpatient data from the U.S. Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services. No hospital can opt-in or opt-out, nor can they pay to be evaluated. The ratings are based on clinical outcomes in 31 common conditions and procedures.

Lee Health has opened a new lab for nurses and certified nursing assistants (CNA) to grow their skills in a highly realistic simulation lab. The new, innovative training experience includes a fully-equipped ICU and medical-surgical rooms. The new simulation lab is part of a larger strategy for training purposes the entire Lee Health system will continue to adopt moving forward.
