There is a national caregiving crisis, leaving family caregivers to navigate a challenging journey without access to adequate resources and limited financial stability. Unlike paid jobs, there is rarely, if ever, time to clock off with family caregivers working overtime and weekends. Their contribution is too often overlooked but demands immediate attention. In this episode of Still Here, real caregivers talk about their sacrifices and the true cost of caregiving.
We are honored to announce our placement as #20 on 2025 Fortune Best Workplaces in New York™ List. Otsuka is a healthcare company made up of motivated individuals—people who share the mission to create new products for better health worldwide. We live by our purpose: defy limitation, so that others can too.
At Otsuka, we hold a deep respect for the value of every mind. We believe that the human mind is infinitely valuable, fostering imagination, intelligence, perception, and so much more. By recognizing this value, we have the power to change the trajectory of people’s lives. This is why we will not rest until mental illnesses and brain diseases are approached with the same priority and urgency as our physical health and recognized as chronic diseases that warrant early, equitable, and accessible intervention. Through products, programs, policies, and advocacy, Otsuka-people will defy any limitation that stands in their way until every mind is valued.
Caregiving is more than an economic or political crisis—it’s a human one. At some point, many of us will become caregivers—or rely on one to care for us. Businesses, policymakers, and individuals all have a role to play in ensuring that caregivers are not just seen but valued. At Otsuka, we are committed to standing with caregivers—the way they stand with their loved ones—and offering resources that may support their care.
In a collaboration delivering on Otsuka’s Patient & Caregiver Promise, our internal Global Medical Affairs and Patient Advocacy & Stakeholder Management teams worked with one of the largest advocacy groups in the US, Mental Health America, to raise awareness on the importance of early detection and intervention of mental health conditions. At Otsuka, we hold a deep respect for the value of every mind. We will not rest until mental illnesses and brain diseases are approached with the same priority and urgency as our physical health and recognized as chronic diseases that warrant early, equitable, and accessible intervention for patients and caregivers everywhere.
Nearly half of U.S. states (48%) are on the brink of an unpaid family caregiving emergency according to findings from the latest in a research series conducted by Columbia University Mailman School of Public Health, and sponsored by Otsuka America Pharmaceutical, Inc., called “America’s Unseen Workforce: The State of Family Caregiving”. The findings show unpaid family caregiving is either “critical” or at “high risk” in 24 states. Family caregivers need more than recognition; they need urgent reform. In healthcare, in government, and in social support networks, it’s time to reciprocate their constant support. It’s time to stand with them the way they stand with their loved ones and offer the tools they may need for the health of others and themselves.
We’re excited to announce the "Caregiving" documentary, by PBS and WETA Washington, D.C., with executive producer Bradley Cooper, is now available to stream on PBS and PBS Documentaries Prime Video Channel. “Caregiving”, a two-hour documentary, portrays paid and unpaid caregivers navigating the challenges and joys of this deeply meaningful work, intertwining intimate personal stories with the untold history of caregiving in the U.S.
To kick off 2025, our CEO and Executive Leadership team joined forces with SuitUp Incorporated —a dynamic nonprofit dedicated to preparing students for their future careers through innovative business plan competitions. Together, we created a day of possibility for 25 students from a local high school. These talented young minds stepped into the role of CEO, tackling a real-world challenge with the guidance of our leadership team. From brainstorming business strategies to crafting marketing plans, they developed and then pitched their ideas to a panel of judges—including one proud Orange High School alum. Their energy was contagious, their ideas bold, and the students left with a renewed belief in what they can achieve. At Otsuka, giving back is more than a value—it’s part of who we are. Our approach to Social Impact is rooted in creating better health worldwide by addressing challenges only we can solve.
Our continued work in nephrology is fueled by a relentless curiosity and a promise to ensure that patient populations with high unmet needs receive the most advanced nephrology care possible. At Otsuka, we remain committed to empowering patients and their families to live a life beyond the limits of their disease, by building awareness, enabling access, and supporting the community.
