Brenda Dill, RN, began working for Prisma Health nearly nine years ago as a housekeeper in Environmental Services. She knew she wanted to pursue another role in the company but was unsure what that should be. Then she met Paula Kemppainen, RN, Assistant Nurse Manager, Greer Memorial Intensive Care Unit, who shared with Brenda what steps she needed to take to advance her career. After completing a class, she worked on Paula’s unit as a monitor tech – but her professional evolution was only just beginning. Today, she is a nurse resident in the ICU at Greer Memorial. “The most special part of my job is working alongside staff members who have supported me in my lengthy journey,” Brenda said. “While I had a huge support system of family, friends and co-workers, Paula really stands out. From day one of prerequisites to graduation day, Paula has been there to support, advise and guide me in absolutely any way she could to make sure I succeed.” “The first time I saw Brenda’s determination was a few months after she’d asked me how she could become a unit secretary or a monitor tech. She had completed both!” Paula said. “She told me her end goal was to become a nurse. We worked out a schedule that allowed her to attend classes during the week and work every weekend – the only way she could work full-time and complete a nursing program. On every break and between semesters, she picked up extra shifts.” Click the image to read the full story.
