On Wednesday, September 13, Prisma Health showcased the completed first phase of a ten-year, $15.7 million expansion project for the Prisma Health Tuomey Hospital Emergency Department. The newly expanded Emergency Department now encompasses a total of 39 beds with the addition of 13 beds and 13,000 square feet to patient care areas, increasing capacity by 33 percent with emphasis on improving the patient experience. Patients will access and receive care in the new space later this month. Mike Bundy, Prisma Health CEO for the Midlands market, said, “This much-anticipated expansion will ease wait times and overcrowding challenges in the emergency department, which is consistently one of Prisma Health’s highest volume emergency departments enterprise-wide.” Over the last 10 years, the Tuomey Emergency Department averaged more than 50,000 visits annually, with a projection of over 55,000 visits in 2023. This expansion increases the capacity to provide emergency care to more than 65,000 patients a year. Local leaders had the opportunity to tour the expanded facility on Wednesday and learned more about the enhanced emergency department capabilities. #PrismaHealthProud
Kat Gause’s children are a daily reminder of the gratitude she feels for the heart surgeon who repaired a leaky valve in her heart nine years ago. Kat was just 21 when she learned she had a heart murmur. “I was so young. I never imagined it would be my heart,” she said. “At the Heart Hospital, they found that I had a really bad leaky valve.” She’s especially thankful that Jeff Martin, MD, was able to repair the valve instead of replacing it. “I still think about how Dr. Martin purposefully spent more time, very thoughtfully, so he could repair it instead.” All told, she was in the hospital two and a half months, before and after surgery. “The nurses were all so sweet,” she said. “I had been in school, still living with my parents. I had to put my life on hold. It changed everything. I knew I wanted to be a nurse, but after this experience, I was more serious about it.” She remembers thinking how amazing her nurses were. “They were so smart, and they all seemed happy. That inspired me to want to go back to work there.” Continue reading...
Janice, Director of Ambulatory Care Management for Prisma Health, began working as a nurse tech at Baptist Hospital 46 years ago. She started in the newborn nursery at Richland as a new nurse graduate, later went to work in the Behavioral Health Unit at Children’s Hospital, then became the Nurse Manager for the pediatric floors and step-down unit. Her career journey took her to the Medically Fragile Children’s Program, where she led a multidisciplinary team that took care of medically complex children, many of them foster children. “The program was based on the PACE model, where the patients and families received all-inclusive care at one site,” she said. “We provided their health care and transportation, offered education on health issues and medication, had a day room, a pharmacist, social worker, dietitian, therapists and nurses.” She assisted with a grant project to develop a care management program for the adult world, which later evolved to include children, and when Prisma Health was created, Janice took over the Upstate and Midlands teams as the Ambulatory Care Management Director. “It’s important to advocate for our patients, to put ourselves in that person’s shoes, to treat them how we would want to be treated,” she said. “You need to make sure they know about as many resources as possible to help them accomplish positive things in their health journey.” Continue reading...
