As a longtime charter partner in cityCURRENT, we used the organization’s Signature Speaker Series event in Memphis to give the charity, Samaritan’s Feet, its time to shine. The global nonprofit donates shoes to children in need as a means advancing their education and economic opportunities. Our relationship with the charity goes back more than 14 years, with our employees using their volunteer hours to organize footwear donations and lend a hand at distribution events. Manny Ohonme, founder and CEO of Samaritan’s Feet, was joined on-stage in conversation with Coach Sue Semrau, former Florida State University Women’s Basketball Head Coach, who has worked with the charity and witnessed its impact first-hand. Smith+Nephew employees then took part in cityCURRENT’s check presentation of $10,000 to Samaritan’s Feet.
Time to pack a bag! Over 30 volunteers from Smith+Nephew Memphis filled backpacks at Methodist Le Bonheur Healthcare for young people in the area. We were pleased to join other local organisations to fill 2,000 backpacks containing school essentials such as glue sticks, pencils and notebooks, helping families get ready for the next school year.
What do you get when you put 70 people into 10 teams and challenge them to support their local community? A wheely great time! Last week, colleagues from our Columbia, MD team linked up with the YMCA to ‘Build a Bike’, answering quiz questions for parts and then constructing 10 bikes to help local young people gear up for work.
We’re proud to collaborate with the NFL’s Player Care Foundation (@nflpcf ), providing mentors who can be matched with former professional athletes to support them on their journey into new careers. Changing career path can feel daunting, especially for athletes retiring from their sport. But, change can be positive, especially when there is support available.
Across the world, our teams have been getting behind the players we have supported at this year's Wimbledon, embracing some of the iconic championship's traditions and most importantly, having some fun with it. Together.
Introducing our Orthopaedics for All initiative - a global advisory board established to amplify diversity by building equity, breaking bias, and inspiring inclusion for individuals wishing to pursue a career in orthopaedic surgery. We recently partnered with @perryinitiative to host forty female high school students at Wake Forest School of Medicine to explore hands-on surgery modules and receive mentorship from women surgeons and engineers. The Perry Initiative inspires young women to be leaders in orthopaedic surgery and engineering by partnering with medical centers, universities and high schools across the US.
