Justice Marbury and Ishmael Cortes, Jr., recent Rochester Prep High School graduates, were among the first students to do intensive work at Rochester Institute of Technology. As part of a strategic partnership between RPHS and RIT, Marbury and Cortes completed a capstone project exploring photojournalism. With support from professors and mentors, the two produced a short documentary about the future of Parcel 5 in Rochester’s city center. This collaboration, tutoring, and mentoring prepares RPHS students for the academic workload and expectations of college-level work, while also exposing them to college life. This year, 134 rising college seniors, like Keri Small at New York University, participated in Uncommon Schools’ Summer Teaching Fellowship. For 7-10 weeks, Small and her colleagues received training and feedback that will open a career opportunity to enter the classroom after graduating from college. We know that having talented teachers of color can have a positive impact on our students, and our Summer Teaching Fellowship is aimed at attracting, hiring, and retaining teachers of color to enrich our students’ learning experiences.
