As we celebrate Black History Month, we remember Reverend William Washington Browne who was formerly enslaved and went on to found the first black-owned financial institution in 1888, the Savings Bank of the Grand Fountain United Order of True Reformers which was located in Richmond, VA. Rev. Browne died in 1897 but the bank continued to thrive and by 1900 the bank was operating in 24 states! #UnivestUnited #DEI #BlackHistoryMonth
