Congratulations to 2020 VNSNY ESPRIT award winner Mary Ann Arneel, BSN-RN, Clinical Director, Intake Services, Business Development, who successfully transitioned her team to working remotely, making sure that nothing--and nobody--slipped through the cracks during the chaotic early days of the pandemic. “At the end of the day,” Mary Ann reflects, “it’s really not about me but about what the patient needs--and about effectively and efficiently managing patient care. We’re all advocates for our patients, which is what makes working in this department so great.”

Since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, VNSNY Home Care’s interdisciplinary teams have successfully cared for nearly 3,000 COVID-19-positive patients. These included patients in mid-recovery who were discharged home from the hospital, as well as others who were treated and recovered at home without ever going to the hospital. "In both instances, our ability to take these patients meant a hospital bed was freed up for someone who needed it," says Andria Castellanos, VNSNY’s Executive Vice President and Chief of Provider Services.

Congratulations to Diana Vargas, Supply Chain Coordinator, PPE Inventory Management & Distribution, for winning a 2020 VNSNY ESPRIT award! When COVID-19 burst onto the scene, Diana stepped up to hand out personal protective equipment, or PPE. Before long, with the help of a team she wound up managing, Diana had completely reorganized VNSNY’s PPE supply rooms, optimized the inventory, and set up schedules to make the best use of staffers’ time, all while making ongoing daily improvements to streamline the PPE processes. “When I started, I didn’t even know what PPE was, but I was eager to help,” she says. “I love to interact with people and to be of service, and I feel like I’m following in Lillian Wald’s footsteps, helping the underserved.”
