VNSNY is a proud partner of Mount Sinai Health System in providing culturally competent care to transgender patients--550 to date--after they leave the hospital. "We provide nurses; physical, occupational, and speech therapists; and social workers who have been trained in the care of transgender patients. Often these patients are used to teaching the provider how to care for them. But with these programs, the providers are knowledgeable in caring for the patient. When a nurse introduces themselves by saying, 'Hi, my name is Shannon, and my pronouns are she, her, and hers,' the patient's anxiety is eliminated." -Shannon Whittington RN MSN CCM LGBTQ Health she/her Clinical Director, VNSNY Gender Affirmation Program

The theme of this month-long celebration is “Nurses Make a Difference”–a concept that takes on extra meaning now, with the heroic work being done by nurses here and the world over in battling the COVID-19 pandemic. Just as in Lillian Wald’s day, we could not function as an organization without the essential work that our nurses do.
