A phone interview with a senior engineer about my background. This was followed by a four round interview with 6 people (that lasted half a day).
The first round was directionless and consisted of chatting with someone on the product team about coffee. Literally about nothing but coffee.
The second round was also directionless and consisted of the two seniors (both recent graduates) from the team asking random questions. They argued with each other at times. One kept shoving a large notepad at me and insisted I draw out some of my answers. It’s like they were hooked on the idea of white boarding me with no white board in the room.
The third round was two very young engineers who administered a clunky and poorly designed coding test. They broadcasted the test live to a slack channel and performed this in a glass conference room that faced the rest of the data team. The test had little to do with data and was a variety of reworded algorithm puzzles you find on hackerrank.
The last round was with the head of the department. She seemed very young as well. She complained that they had hired and lost three people in only a few months. That their pipelines were in disarray and that they needed someone who could help sort it out. All I could think of was how young everyone was... no wonder they’ve built something that has so much technical debt that no one wants to fix it.
