      Interview

-First sent in resume with a video to the hiring manager, then was an in-office interview with 3 people and a writing assignment. The last stage was coming in to make some cold calls. -Overall a great experience, the interview was thorough but that just shows the company is serious about who they hire.

3-part interview process with an initial phone screen followed by in person. Typical SDR questions were asked including behavior questions/previous work experience. Everyone was professional and I always heard back in a timely manner from the hiring manager. Their office is located in a great area and easy to find.

      Anonymous Interview Candidate
      New York, NY
      No offer
      Negative experience
      Difficult interview

      Application

I applied online. The process took 3 weeks. I interviewed at Aircall (New York, NY)

      Interview

Had one initial phone interview that went well. I was told I would hear back on Monday (the phone screen was Thursday) and I never heard back. The following week I emailed HR and they invited me to come into the office. The office interview lasted 2.5 hours and I spoke to 6 different people. All of the employees I met were nice and welcoming, but all 6 asked the same questions in the same sequence. If they had all sat in the room at once the interview would have lasted 30 minutes. After this interview, they invited me to video chat with the CEO for the final round. The last round of this interview was extremely uncomfortable. The CEO asked if I had a boyfriend, constantly told me throughout the interview that I looked "too stressed out and too serious" while I was nodding and listening to his explanation of the job, and finally would say throughout the interview 'I don't know about you' 'I feel like you would quit because the job is hard' 'You worry me' 'Honestly, I just don't see it.' I am not sure if this was a tactic to get me to "sell myself" but it made me very uncomfortable and it was highly unprofessional, especially from a CEO. There are many other hypothetical and tactical questions he could have asked me that would exemplify my thought process, rather than defending myself while being scolded on video chat. After this interview, I emailed him a thank you (although I had zero interest in this job moving forward) he not only never replied, the HR rep never contacted me, which is negligent after meeting me in person and 4 hours in total interviewing with this company. I would NOT recommend.

This is Olivier (CEO). On behalf of myself and all of Aircall, I would like to sincerely apologize that this was your experience. I’m very sorry you felt this way, as this was neither mine, nor anyone at the company’s intention. For what it's worth, I would like to explain my rationale and what I have learned from your feedback: The main objective of our interview with candidates is to understand your interests and be sure the fit would be mutually beneficial, both professionally and personally. Hence my questions about the driving factors behind your move to New York (personal reasons, attractiveness of the city - or just for the role/company). I apologize if those questions came off distasteful or offensive in anyway. In such a short video interview, my aim is to read through any facade and truly understand who you are as a person and what you're looking for. Sometimes, this includes some rather direct questions to observe a candidate’s candid reaction. So to answer your question, yes, they are interview tactics. But the teachable moment for me here is that there may be more efficient and less confrontational tactics that I could use, and in the future, I’ll be paying close attention to this and improving it. Additionally, we have a company-wide culture of candor in the way we give each other feedback - and I have always felt it more beneficial for a candidate to get direct feedback in real-time. And in those instances, I do appreciate some push-back from the candidate to justify his/her position. I remain firm on the idea of giving live feedback, and it has proven very positive with a few of our best hires. But in the end, I realize it’s a CEO to entry-level position interview, and I will be more sensitive about the questions I ask of candidates in the future. Regarding answers to "thank you" emails, I must admit I generally don't answer these, and I let the hiring manager follow up. When you wrote your post, we were finalizing interviews with other candidates and wanted to wait before answering you, but be assured we respond to each and every candidate we interview. Finally, I make it a point to personally know everyone we hire, and this interview is my first opportunity to do that. But any professional relationship is a two-way street, and I see interviews as a way for candidates to confirm they'd be happy to work along the interviewer. Clearly, I did not convince you on this and there's a least one positive outcome: you could make up your mind. I wish you all the best in your search.
