I'm a mid-lvl front-end engineer. AirCall reached out to me on Hired.com in March of 2019.
My initial experience with the company began with meeting the CTO during a 30 minute video call. I was asked questions about my background and the CTO presented information about the company and it's technology. It went well and we both decided to move forward with the next interview which would continue the video format and introduce another software engineer at the company to discuss more full-stack technical details.
During the second interview I was asked a few technical questions including one bizarre one by the engineer at the company, the only HTML question at that. If you could choose one html tag to describe yourself, which would it be? I figured it was just a fun question so I answered <video> or <img> and that was that, just a random smile and no follow up. After the interview I was informed that we could move forward and was given a take home assignment to do within a week, the assignment itself located on their Github barely communicates exactly what should be done but after some thought you can figure it out. I presented them my solution in less than a week and was asked to come in for an interview.
The third interview is meant to for you present the app completed during the take home to a team of 6 engineers at once, a few friendly and others just giving you blank stares and annoyed looks. I expected everyone to have reviewed the app to at least be able to ask relevant questions to assess my skills but only about 2 people reviewed the app not including the CTO. I was told to review the app in 15 minutes from the Github PR page so it is a bit awkward scrolling through and thinking of how to best present what you did. I stopped in the middle of my explanation to determine if anyone understood and the CTO states he doesn't understand and to just state what you did quickly.
After my explanation, the team begins laughing together about a few inside jokes as the CTO tests my code which seems to pass. The CTO opens the floor for the team to ask me questions and I'm asked questions by only 2 to 3 people such as "What did you learn from the assignment?" , "What was the biggest challenge?" No serious technical discussion at all and they seemed to be out of questions after that so one asks me "Did I ask you the html question? What tag would you consider yourself? " Or Did I asked you the difference between a webhook and an API? Essentially, the same questions discussed in the initial technical interview, which is all junior dev questions.
Then the CTO abruptly ends the interview with "Thank You for your time", "We have more interviews so we will be in touch at the end of the week". I shake everyone's hand and leave.
3 Days later I get a rejection letter stating that they will be looking for someone else with more experience to lead the front end team. The CTO never stated it was a lead or even Sr position and if it was no questions was asked to assess those skills on-site so they could have saved us both the time during technical discussion and take home.
My overall assessment of the company is that it is a massive waste of time to interview with them. Lol, I mean seriously It amazes me how engineers who pride themselves on problem solving can't implement a logical hiring policy especially given that failing to do so is a waste of productive time and money. I suggest the AirCall CTO and his engineering team get caught up on hiring optimization problems. as a young startup it should prove beneficial.
