      Sales Development Representative Interview

      Dec 11, 2019

      Application

I applied online. The process took 4 weeks. I interviewed at AskNicely (Portland, OR) in Nov 2019

      Interview

To summarize it in full, it was not only the longest but also the most misleading hiring process that I've been through. For this position they had me go through a phone interview, 2 in-person interviews with managers in the sales department, a group lunch interview with their sales team, and a final interview with their CEO (5 interactions in total for an associate level position). All of these interactions lasted approximately for a month as well. After all these meetings their HR/recruiting associate emailed me saying they were reaching out to my references (2 weeks after I provided them the information) and then finally got the rejection email. Everything was going great up until the CEO interview. Was late to the interview, kept getting distracted by co-workers and talked with them when we were trying to find a spot in the office to interview, and then worst of all pulled his phone out in front of me to answer texts/emails. It would be an understatement to say I put off by that especially by the main leader and co-founder. Wouldn't do that to a potential candidate if I were in his shoes. I did get cold feet from this interaction and turned into a "humpty-dumpty" as to if I really wanted this and especially working for a leader like this. When asked about why they weren't moving forward, they mentioned that their CEO expressed, "uncertainty of cultural fit", believing it to be more of a "gut feeling" with the interaction. Mind you, this is the same individual who pulled out his phone in front of me during an interview and the same company that dragged me through all these interactions. It left a bad taste in my mouth and really is something I don't want to write on here since you all seem awesome and the company & culture is on the upswing. My feedback?: Stop pouring water on people's doorsteps and telling them it's raining. Don't do this to future, potential candidates for your open opportunities in years to come.

Hi there, this is Aaron (the CEO). First, thanks a bunch for your comments. Our internal mantra is "Love your feedback" which applies whether it's positive (yay, we get to celebrate doing things well) or negative (yay, we learned something that can help us get better). Both are good things and, in this case, it's clearly the 2nd one. I'm sorry that the experience wasn't great for you. We do put a lot of time and effort into the interview process which, in turn, means candidates have to invest a bunch of time too. We think this investment is worthwhile as changing jobs a big deal and it's best to really get to know each other to make a confident decision. When I get to meet candidates (I interview every person that joins), it's partly a courtesy to the candidate so that we can connect personally and thoroughly explore whether the direction and culture of the business matches up well with the style and aspirations of the individual. Part of my process is introducing you to other people in the team (I do this for every hire too) so you can get a sense of the character and general nice-ness of our people (you just can get that from an meeting room) - that was what the talking to others thing was all about :) On the phone behavior, I always take notes for everyone I meet so I can share specific feedback with the hiring manager - sorry I didn't make that clearer, I can see how that might've looked a bit off. I wish you all the best for your career search - the fact that our process took you to the final chat with me is a signal that you're a great candidate so I'm sure you'll find a great next step. Happy holidays! Best, Aaron.
