I applied online on 22/05/16 and got an email on the same day asking me to complete the online assessment. On the 7th June I was congratulated on receiving an invitation for an interview and you are given a selection of dates and times. Try and choose your date or time quickly as there are other people to interview and the best times may get chosen quickly. I chose mine to take place on the 14th at 15:00 until 16:00. It only took about 45 minutes though.
I arrived half an hour early to have a look around the store and find my chosen product that I was told to research in the email. Then at 14:45, I informed a member of staff by the tills that I was here for an interview and he took me to sign in and I was brought to the back to be greeted by the assistant manager who would be interviewing me. All the staff were so lovely to me and the assistant who took me to the back was even giving me tips. Once in the back, the assistant manager scanned my passport and whilst doing so we had a little chat about what I was doing at the moment, what I studied at university, where I lived etc... He seemed so interested in me and it calmed me down instantly.
Then the interview began with simple questions concerning my availability and my flexibility. He informed me on what duties I would be doing and what hours I would be working. He asked whether I had been working in Manchester since I started university in September. What experience I had gained from this and what other jobs I have had in the past. It was quite informal at times as we would start talking about general things in between the formal questions occasionally, but it was nice as the assistant manager got to know me on a personal level and it relaxed me. He went to ask me the "Describe a time when..." questions and then we went onto the shop floor and most of the interview was done here. He asked how I would go about helping a customer in general, what questions would I ask. How would I differentiate a confident and an unconfident customer. Then I had to go around the store pointing out unconfident or confident customers and explaining why and what I would do to help them. I was also taken round certain parts of the store and asked "If a customer wanted to treat themselves, what would you suggest?", "If a customer wanted to try a new perfume, what sort of questions would you ask, what would you say?", "If a customer wanted to buy a cheap sun cream for their holiday, what sort of things would you say/ask?". Then I was asked what is my favourite part of the store and I said makeup so he took me to the makeup counters and told me to go through the aisles and explain to him how I would improve the look of the store to make customer's experience better and why. I went through and said that I would clean the testers, make sure testers were always available, make sure products were always facing forward and were brought to the front, make sure that promotions and price tags were always visible and that the stock is always replenished. Finally, I was asked to go find my chosen product where I was asked to tell him all about it. I chose a Garnier moisturiser for combination/oily skin and I talked about the price, any offers, what it does, about certain ingredients, who it would benefit and why, its target audience etc. This is a product I have used for years on a daily basis and I could answer many questions from my personal experience and from the research I had done on it so make sure you pick a product that you're confident with, preferably one that you use and love so you can give a positive and thorough presentation. Lastly, I was asked to go around the store to find and interact with customers and to simply ask whether they needed help. This was the scariest part for me but the assistant manager reassured me by saying that if they ask for something difficult or I struggle, that he'll be there to help as it's quite a difficult task and it won't look badly on me because I won't be able to deal with certain things yet. But unfortunately there were no customers in the store at the time, they were all at the till, so we left this part and went into the back to finish off with one question: "Why do you think you should get this particular job and not the other people who will be getting interviewed this week?".
Once the interview was finished, we just chatted a little and he walked me to the door and we shook hands. He was so lovely and I thought it went quite well. 6 days later I received a phone call with a job offer.
