      Customer Assistant Interview

      Application

I applied online. I interviewed at Boots (Llantrisant, Rhondda Cynon Taff, Wales) in Jul 2016

      Interview

I applied online and was sent an email a few hours later to complete an online personality test. After completing this I was sent another email with an invite to interview. I went early to check out the store, noting where everything was etc. During the interview, I was asked questions that I was told was based off the areas of the online personality test that I didn’t answer so well at. There were three of these questions in total. After this, I was asked to ‘sell’ an item to the manager interviewing me - I picked an item that I knew well and had looked up on the website the day before. The interviewing manager acted like a customer, pretending to have a conversation about the item, saying things like ‘it’s quite expensive’ etc. I made sure here to mention that they were on offer at the moment, they were also in miniatures, etc. After this, I went out on to the shop floor and had to approach customers and ask if they needed help with anything. They specifically said that they wanted to see me trying to engage with the customer, asking them questions about the items that they were looking at, seeming as though I was genuinely interested in them; rather than asking open ended questions that the customer would use to brush me off. At this part of the interview I would suggest sticking to the areas of the shop that you know best, as I did wander into the fake tan section and asked an old lady if she wanted help, and knowing nothing about fake tan when she started asking me questions I couldn’t answer them - luckily the interviewer was distracted at this point so I quickly got myself back down to haircare and pretended nothing had happened. Like in any retail interview I tried to come across as fun, friendly, confident, bubbly, chatty, positive. I asked about opportunities to progress which I think went down well as they felt like I wasn’t just looking for a job, rather a career, which I felt went in my favour. They scored me on how well I had answered the questions and how well I had done on the shop floor, so knowing this I tried to include as much in my answers as possible and threw in some keywords like communication and teak work as well.

      Interview

Easy enough interview, just asked the typical interview questions. Thought i fit the role well but did not receive an offer or any reason for not being selected. Interview took place in a cleaning closet, which i did find strange as it was opposite the staff break room.
