      Sales Assistant Interview

      Sep 8, 2017
      Anonymous Interview Candidate
      Canterbury, England
      Declined offer
      Positive experience
      Difficult interview

      Application

I applied online. I interviewed at Boots (Canterbury, England) in Sep 2017

      Interview

(I HAD THE INTERVIEW YESTERDAY so haven't received an offer yet, so I had to choose the 'yes but rejected' offer option). I applied through Indeed and received an email stating I was able to continue my application by completing an online questionnaire. It asked about qualities, workplace scenarios etc. As my answers were along the lines of what they were looking for, I received an email saying I was invited to an interview, and that I could choose the date and time of it online. I attended the interview the following week - in preparation you have to choose an item that appeals to you personally, and you have to wear smart clothes. I arrived at the store 15 mins early, had a look around and made sure that my chosen item was in stock. I told a member of staff I was there for an interview, and they asked for the manager. I was taken to the office where she checked I had my passport, and then started the interview. She asked if I had an retail experience, and why I wanted to work for Boots specifically. The majority (almost all) of the questions were 'describe a time when...' questions, for example 'describe a time when being approachable allowed a customer to open up to you in a way which they normally wouldn't'. I personally found some of these quite challenging. The questioning part lasted a maximum of 25 mins, and then we went onto the shop floor. I was told to find my item, and then she asked me to tell her all about it. She also gave me scenario questions such as 'why would you recommend this product to a mother with a teenage son?' and 'what would I gain from using this product?' After that she asked me to approach customers. There was only one customer in the store at the time who was looking at fake tan. I asked if she was okay there, and if there was a particular type of fake tan she was after. As she uses one specific brand, she was mainly stuck on what colour to buy as it needed to be dark. I suggested she use the darkest colour, use it sparingly and build up if she is confident in self tanning. She took my advice, bought the item then asked if there were tanning mits to go with it. As I didn't know the store well the manager who was observing directed the way. I noticed there were different types of mits so I explained the different options to her. After this the manager took me to a random aisle. This one had hairbrushes. She asked 'what are your thoughts about this section?' and then asked 'if you were given 10 minutes to improve this section, what would you do?' I largely focused on the tidiness of the section, how well stocked it was and readjusting the layout. It was then the end of the interview process, so we went back to the office where she photocopied my passport. She asked if I had any questions, so I asked if there are training opportunities at Boots, to which she answered in great detail. She walked with me back to the shop floor where I then left.
