      Interview

Friendly and straightforward. Prepare before to demonstrate previous experience in the field of working in retail to support your interview. The interview may require you to go onto the shop floor to help and advise customers to support them in their buying experience. This will help your interviewers to see firsthand your communication skills that will lead to a job offer.

      Application

I applied online. The process took 4 weeks. I interviewed at Boots (Dundee, Scotland)

      Interview

I applied online, found the vacancy on Indeed. Took about 2 weeks to get a reply email saying I had an interview. I went in and the manager was very nice and friendly, she showed me around the staff areas and took me into a room for the interview. She asked typical questions: what's your availability, experience, why boots etc. Then she went through a question sheet and chose 3 to ask me. These were situational questions. Then she took me down to the shop floor for a practical exercise, which included approaching and showing customers the new No.7 hand cream. She followed me around as I approached two separate ladies and asked if they wanted to try the cream. I got lucky here because one of the ladies was a frequent buyer of the cream and enjoyed talking about it with me, so I got to show off my knowledge on the product/give her sample. I was told previously that I wasn't trying to "sell" the product, but just let people know it was available. Then I had to choose a product from the shop floor (I chose biore charcoal skin scrub) and pretend to sell it to the manager. I had previously researched the product so I knew what to say - "active minerals" and all that jazz. Then I was asked to look at a shelf and describe how it could be improved. This all took about an hour, and that was it over. I then actually got the email about 3 weeks later from recruitment saying I had been Unsuccessful. However, I got a phonecall about two weeks after that asking if i was still available for a 10hr contract, because they had a new opening. I start in 2 weeks!
