I applied for this job via LinkedIn and, a few weeks later, I was contacted by the recruitment agency in charge of hiring for this role, as it was a maternity cover. I was invited to the first interview with the hiring manager and told that the process would consist of two interviews, as the team was aiming to hire someone by the end of April.
- During the first call I wasn’t asked anything specific, but only asked questions myself.
- The second interview was with the person that I would replace and I was asked several questions, while also had the opportunity to pose mine.
Things became quite confusing after this.
- I was contacted by the in-house team to schedule a call with another person.
- After a few days, I saw on LinkedIn that the job opening was reposted as an internal hire. I contacted the agency and I was told that was it merely a formality, since I was still their top candidate.
- I was then asked to complete an extensive case study and submit it via email. I was then communicated that the team was really impressed by my presentation and had no follow-up questions.
- After I submitted my presentation, the recruitment agency said they would nail down the contract details with Celonis and come back to me, but I never heard back. They disappeared and the company took over all communications.
- Several days later, I was invited to a call with someone in the Talent Acquisition with the goal to discuss various hiring options for this role. It was mid June at this point, and the company hadn’t clarified whether the wanted to hire in-house or through a recruitment agency.
- Two weeks later, I was invited for a coffee chat with the hiring team at the office without any additional briefing. Once there, it became clear that was another formal interview. I was asked to present the case study that I had submitted almost three weeks earlier, but I didn’t receive any questions from them this time either. During the meeting, my German language skills were also tested.
- The team promised to share their final decision by the end of that week, but I didn’t receive it until the beginning of the following one.
- In spite of all the praises and having gone through five different interviews and a case study over a period of two months, I was rejected because the team felt my expertise was in a different industry. This came as a surprise, since my background was clear in my CV from the very beginning.
I understand I might not have been the best fit for this role, but I felt completely mistreated during the hiring process. Despite priding themselves with offering transparent communication and processes, I experienced the opposite. The hiring conditions changed constantly throughout the process, as the process and interview steps themselves. This made me feel disrespected - a feeling that was only confirmed when I offered the Talent Aquisition team feedback on my experience at the end of the process and my offer was ignored. Celonis is a leader in its field and seems a fantastic company to work for once you’re there, so I am sure they can do much better when dealing with candidates - especially when it comes to establishing clear processes, respecting timelines, and treating people respectfully.
