They had a small group of people do a very brief group interview which was basically just stating your interest in applying and what social justice issues you are passionate about. The main interviewer went over some of the work the organization does. They focused on legislative changes, elections, and awareness campaigns. They did not go into how fundraising was a priority, although the room was decked out in slogans and fundraising goals/quotas/current leaders in fundraising. They did not describe their personal role in any detail. They spoke in generalities. Pointedly did not ask us to speak about our experience or educational backgrounds.
Then they called people individually for one on one interviews.
In the one on one I was asked several brief questions that pertained to my experience and willingness to fundraise. I was given a very brief description of the role. I was not asked about my current employment or when a good start date would be.
I in turn asked questions about salary, benefits, and what kind of work this role included. I was told that this job was a mainly a canvassing job. The salary ranged, and depended on how much one fundraised. The other benefits were not gone over in any detail and the interviewer seemed reluctant to talk more about this in general. Since this was not listed in the job description I was not impressed.
I was offered the chance to come back within the next few week for a second interview to “try out” canvassing and see if I was a good fit.
Since I was not under the impression this was a canvassing job from the online description I have chosen to decline.
My overall impression is that they hire just about anybody to do this job and they were overly eager to put me to work right away. While the organization seems to have a laid back office culture, I was struck by the unprofessional way and super streamlined interview process was. The main interviewer was late and did not arrive until after the appointed time for the first portion of the interview process. Even with them being late the whole time spent there was minimal compared to other interviews I’ve done. These were warning flags for me. The job seems to have high turnover rate.
