      Service Designer Interview

      Application

I applied online. I interviewed at Fearless (Baltimore, MD) in Nov 2023

      Interview

I'm pretty shocked and sad that I'm writing this review. I feel I've been discriminated against and there really is no excuse for it. I applied to Fearless through LinkedIn and was contacted by email to conduct a phone screening interview. I was pretty excited, because I strongly believe in their "power for good" messaging and approach to designing government tech that focuses on the people and organizational enablement. I have over a decade experience in the industry and saw this approach as really valuable to the work being provided. The initial phone screening went well, which meant I would advance to the next step in the process which was an over the phone cultural fit interview with the diversity recruitment manager. This is where the red flags started for me. As excited as I was to see the email that my experience qualified me to move to the second round, the email was sent after 3:00pm asking me what time I had available to speak the very next day. My reply back went unanswered till the day of the supposed interview when I received another email notifying me that the diversity recruitment manager was sick and that we could speak at a specific time the following week if I was available. I did eventually get to speak with the diversity recruitment manager who, I swear was playing a video game while we spoke about my background and passions. It was probably the worst experience for a professional setting that I've ever encountered being interrupted by game noises while talking to someone who didn't seem to care what I had to say as they read the next question off their list. I just tried to ignore the video game noises coming in through the phone during our conversation and stayed positive, even followed up with a thank you letter for the conversation. I got notice within 2 days that I wouldn't be moving forward in the process. I've never been rejected for a job because I didn't fit or add to the diversity before. Especially egregious considering the mission and work being provided to government services. Overall it was a blatant rejection of me on attributes that have nothing to do with my experience or ability to perform the work required, and seems to be in direct opposition to what Fearless says they believe in and want to change.
