After a brief phone interview with the COO, I met with the CEO for an hour and then 4 team members for 30 minutes each.
After that they asked for references. Thank goodness they didn’t call them and bother them.
Next they asked me to speak to an advisor who doesn’t work for the company.
Then they told me I would need to give a presentation to the company.
Then they gave me a data test in Python. It involved code and data analysis. I haven’t written code in 20 years, and never in Python (obviously). I spent several hours with it, then asked a Python programmer from Google for help. His comment was that it should have more instructions. (He spent an hour with it, and said I should just state that I wasn’t technical. It would take him several hours to understand the libraries.)
I did.
They told me they’d get back to me in the new year with a different test.
They did get back to me, but said other execs had passed the test, and they wouldn’t move forward with me.
This company is filled with young friends from Stanford grad school. They are bright, but most have no experience in shifting from technology to product. They handed out C titles to each other, and clearly are looking to duplicate skills on their exec team, rather than add to them. My best advise is ask to see all their “tests” before giving any references. I can’t say if they’ll make it, but right now they are in pilots with hardware running on Raspberry Pi. They’ve got a long way to go.
