Focal Systems is on a mission to lower the cost of living for all consumers by optimizing inventory and on-shelf availability for brick-n-mortar retail via AI, Deep Learning and Computer Vision.
In 2015, the founders of Focal Systems were challenged with a question: What industry would benefit the most from AI and computer vision? After extensive research and countless conversations with retailers, it was determined that brick-and-mortar retail, with its razor-thin margins, stood the most to gain from AI. From that, Focal Systems was born, and we set out on a mission to lower the cost of living by optimizing brick-n-mortar retail on a global scale.
Shortly after ideation, we were angel-backed by Stanford Alumni. Then we were accepted into the Y Combinator class of Winter 2016. During Y Combinator, we worked with several independent retailers throughout the San Francisco Bay Area, which allowed us to learn and apply some of their most valuable lessons. We are proud that we still maintain many of those original relationships today.
From there, we had a clear charter to grow. We raised our seed round and started sharing our offering with some of the largest retailers in the world.
Since then, we have continued to hone our technology, expand our global customer base, and deepen our understanding of the retail industry. We are currently Series B and operate in the US, Canada and the UK - and we are forging into Australia. Our HQ is in San Francisco, California and we have a tech-hub in Poland.
In early 2024, we went through a sea change, hiring a new CEO (Kevin Johnson). Kevin brings years of experience extracting high value out of growing companies. Equally important, he is committed to treating everyone with dignity and respect, and has renewed our focus on culture, collaboration, integrity and DEI. This transformation has been embraced by the entire team and will filter into everything we do, from our employees, to our customers & vendors, and beyond.
