To apply for any of the Gap brands - (Gap, Old Navy, Banana Republic) - you have to go online and complete the online application which includes just regular personal information, - (name, address, social security number, availability, previous employers, references) and an assessment test. The assessment test consists of questions having to do with your personality and retail knowledge. Even if you've never had retail experience, the questions are pretty easy. If you pass, you're placed in the green zone to which the general manager can see that you're qualified for the job.
I applied in April and got a call back in September. The interview was between the general manager and I, and took place right in the middle of the store. She asked me questions like "Why do you wanna work here?" and "How would you deal with a difficult customer?". After the questions, she had me walk the floor for about five minutes as if I already worked there to see how I interacted with customers. Afterward, she said I'd get a call back within two days telling me whether I got the job or not. Two days later I got the call saying they wanted to hire me. We talked about pay rates and scheduled me for orientation.
