I applied online. The process took 2 weeks. I interviewed at Hy-Vee (Independence, MO) in Aug 2010
Interview
I applied online and was selected for an in-person interview. I arrived for my interview early and sat in the Hy-Vee dining area while I waited. One of the supervisors took me upstairs to the office area and interviewed me. I was approaching my senior year in high school and was asked about my achievements and activities. I knew he was impressed with me, because he said, "You know, you're the kind of person that Hy-Vee likes to have as store owners and working in the corporate offices." Of course I didn't have plans for that but I basically knew when I left the interview that I probably had the position in the bag.
I was so confident that I turned down an interview with another company who called me that afternoon. And I was right. I got the phone call offer a few days later. We arranged a time for filling out tax paperwork and the drug test, and I was well on my way to being Hy-Vee's newest employee.
Very straight forward with little hard skills required. Mostly basics on background. Previous experience not necessary. The job is quite flexible on hours and scheduling, but it does depend on location obviously.
Very easy, took less than 30 minutes and asked very simple questions to get a feel for your personality. It’s a very simple role so this is not that surprising.
Not very difficult in my opinion. This is a checker position--they are just trying to understand basic values and decency. Which shouldn't be a problem as long as you have them.
No prep required, I would say.
