      Application

I applied through a recruiter. I interviewed at LiminalArc (Denver, CO) in Mar 2021

      Interview

Recruited through LinkedIn and after agreeing to interview, I was sent a number of materials via email to familiarize myself with: two 1-hour long YT videos and a lengthy white paper. Annoyed at first but actually found the content valuable. Then I was prescreened by another recruiter over the phone who asked me to speak about my experience helping organizations transforming to Agile. She then said I was being targeted for the program level so "was I passionate about it?" I of course said yes. She said she would progress me forward and that meant three assessments - a cognitive aptitude test of 50 questions, a personality test, and a competencies test - each expected to take about 15 minutes. When I received the links to these test, I was also sent three more pieces of content to review - a robust PPT deck, a different white paper and another 1 hour YT video. I took the tests and found the personality test (The Color Code) to be very useful as it showed me my results. However, I was not given the results of the other two after completion and the cognitive test (CCat) leaned heavily toward math equations and shape pattern recognitions. I received a phone call from that recruiter a day or so later and was scheduled for an interview with two people. At that video (Zoom) interview, I was mainly quizzed on my knowledge of the materials they had sent me and the two interviewers took a sort of "good cop, bad cop" approach with one being incredibly difficult and antagonistic. Maybe he was trying to act like a difficult client to see how I would respond but I found it very off-putting. I was also shown two grainy Agile charts and asked to identify them and describe what I thought I was seeing in them. I thought I knew but one kept saying "anything else?" When it was my turn to ask questions, I asked about some of the feedback I had read on Glassdoor and what their reviews would read if they had to describe the pros, cons, and given advice to management about LeadingAgile. I did not feel I got real responses. Everything was just coming up daisies. I asked about travel requirements as that had been the first thing I had told the original recruiter I was not willing to do. They indicated they thought travel would continue to be a requirement "once everything got back to normal in the second half of the year." I did not hear anything more about the position for about a week and then got a phone call from the original person who had found me on LinkedIn. He said he "didn't like to leave voicemails about this sort of thing" on my voicemail so I knew instantly I was not receiving an offer. His email confirmed as much. I was neither surprised nor disappointed. Ultimately, I am grateful for the experience because it introduced me to their methods and gave me a practical approach to use in future Agile transformation practices. And it also gave me the gift of knowing my personality color which has incidentally become an important topic in an Agile coaching course I'm not taking.

      Interview questions [1]

      Question 1

      - What do you coach at the portfolio/program level versus at the project/team level? - How would you move a leader in a lower left quadrant to and upper right quadrant?

Really appreciate the feedback. We have been trying to lean out our interview process for a while now... streamlining it a little to make it go faster... but finding folks that are a good fit here is difficult. We interview 99 people for every one job offer. We've made some changes to make it go faster, but finding the right people is super important to us. We are a people based consultancy after all. Some folks get turned off by our assessment process. That said, we have found a very high correlation between the results and our various titles and roles. The rigor of our approach saves both of us the trouble of making a hire, subsequently getting released from an account, maybe two, and being let go. If we can't keep you billable and sticky on the account, you can't work here. We do everything we can to avoid this situation. It isn't good for either of us. The materials we gave you to read are essential because if you aren't familiar with what we do and how we do it.... it's tough to map your background and skills and see how they would apply in our world. We don't do things the way that other consultancies do. It's important you know that before joining us. We are a unique company. We have a unique approach to change. We only want you to work here if you buy into what we do, and believe what we believe. We aren't trying to be everything to everyone. But if you don't mind some prep-work and don't mind taking some personality assessments before you talk to us... and you're great and what you do... we can be an awesome place to work. But again, we aren't a great place to work for everyone that applies. We generally believe it's better to find that out early before either of us makes a decision that won't work out in the long run. Thanks again for taking the time to interview and I'm glad you got a little something out of the process. Sorry it didn't work out, but we wish you the best of luck in your future endeavors.
