I applied online. The process took 1 week. I interviewed at Marks & Spencer (Macclesfield, England) in Jun 2014
Interview
Was taken into a small room which had a few pieces of paper placed on the desk. It told gave you information about a business (relatively similar to M&S) and provided guidelines to a task. The task is a role play, in which you are given 5/10 minutes to read and analyse as much information about this company's food products along with its discounts and a store directory sheet.
The key thing here is to identify the food out of stock and select the luxury replacements for these items. The items out of stock will be the red pepper and the parma ham. With this in mind make yourself comfortable with the rest of the information. You don't need to know things off by heart but the role play will go more smoothly if you know things of the top of your head.
Once the time is up the interviewer will come back in pretending to be a customer needing help for the event she is supposedly doing tonight. During this conversation, your goal is to help the customer feel happy with the suggestions that you give her, because she will ask for the items out of stock.
NB. You can not ask the assessor any questions about the role play when they come back into the room...
Once you have passed the role play, you will then get an interview with the section manager who will ask you 6/7 questions, 4 of which will be focused on the "i's" of M & S: integrity, inspire, innovate, in-touch.
You will then receive a phone call a couple of days later congratulating you (if you were successful)

Interview
Initially went and the last candidate overran (i waited for 40 minutes extra) so my interview got moved to next week. Original interviewer wasn't available so a colleague performed it. They could not find the interview sheet so had to come up with questions on the spot and get my details again. I was a bit annoyed but I think the interview was okay.
