      Senior Account Manager Interview

      Aug 27, 2020
      Anonymous Interview Candidate
      No offer
      Negative experience
      Average interview

      Application

I applied through a recruiter. The process took 3 weeks. I interviewed at Paycom in Aug 2020

      Interview

I was initially reached out to via LinkedIn by a Paycom recruiter in the beginning of August. The messaging was so pre-meditated and insincere, "my team has been stalking your profile for months!" "include your college GPA- we check!" which was a red flag from the start. I spoke to the recruiter and was asked an abundance of questions about my high school experiences which I found to be odd since that was 10 years ago. Then I was asked about my sales quota in my current role and my successes in great detail. The recruiter was impressed but says she was weary of my current role (managing National Accounts for a large sports medicine conglomerate, mind you) because I did not have "rankings" or tangible awards- not every sales person works for a big pharma and is "ranked". I was asked to make a brag book and sent examples of former hires. I took 3 hours out of my day to dig up old emails with sales numbers, rankings from my pharmaceutical job, acknowledgements of success from higher ups and tried to paint a good picture of my achievements. When the recruiter challenged the legitimacy of my "President's Club" and "Rookie of the Year" awards I reached out to my prior small pharmaceutical company manager and asked that he write me a letter of recommendation to satisfy her need to have proof- which he gladly obliged. I spoke on multiple occasions directly with the recruiter on the phone, email and via LinkedIn and was told the rebuttals I would have with the Manager of the division I was applying for (not enough cold calling experience). Which I would understand if I didn't directly cold call every day and pharmaceutical sales is absolutely cold calling experience. Before my interview, the recruiter told me the base salary was $10,000 more than what the Sales Manager did and had completely different numbers all around when it came to commission, salary and potential once you hit a certain level of sales. During my interview with the hiring manager the service was horrible on our call (which during COVID I understand because virtual meetings are new for everyone) and her picture was frozen the majority of the time. I tried my best to not be distracted by this and answered her questions as they were asked. I made small talk and felt comfortable. The questions were very basic about what my role is like now and why I've been successful. How I'd feel in a high-pressure job where my role would be on the line every month and having to talk to all levels of management. The manager went on to tell me that the average sales rep is making $300k/year. Seems a little inflated to me… At the end of the call I asked questions that I had jotted down as I was learning about Paycom from their website and finished off by asking what the next step would be. I was told the Regional Manager would speak to me next but she's on vacation the whole following week, so it should be the week after that. I was confident and felt that the manager confirmed that I would be speaking with the Regional Manager. I interviewed and received a call within a couple of days from the recruiter. The recruiter told me that they were moving forward with other candidates with more software sales experience (something that was not brought up as an objection once) and that the manager said I seemed "nervous". I truly felt the people I spoke to at Paycom were extremely condescending through this entire process and I was even willing to take a pay cut for this job if it were the right fit. IT GETS BETTER- the SAME recruiter that reached out originally and I had been communicating back and forth with FOR WEEKS via phone, text, email and LinkedIn…The same person that gave me feedback, told me I needed to make a "brag book" and told me I was denied post interview, messaged me again on LinkedIn today the same cookie cutter email asking me if I'd be interested in working for Paycom and that they were impressed with my background and were sorry they never followed up!! I'm sorry but really…. I'm extremely dissatisfied with this company and the people they choose to represent them. I'm glad I dodged a bullet there and I hope that future hires take this review to heart.
