Let me first start out with this process was done in the midst of a pandemic and they are not a remote company. I also want to say that I do believe that they are really trying to find the best fit possible culturally and technically. My interview process was over 2 months from start to finish with many rounds of interviews. 1 Recruiter - Basically wanting to make sure that you're not a psycho and that you're vaguely qualified. 2. Director of Product - A conversation about your background, where you were, where you are now and what you want to accomplish. 3. A design challenge, fairly extensive, here is where you show how you think. 4. Interview with the Product team - Also a conversation, similar to the interview above, but introducing the team where they get to know you and whether or not you might be a good fit. 5. Recruiter 2 - A second interview with the recruiter where I learned a bit more about the culture and whether or not it's a good fit. 6. What would have been an in-person design challenge, getting to see the offices and where you might work. This was my biggest let down and most difficult part of the entire process. This interview was done online and it was 4 hours long. The first two interviews were a mix of a conversation and grilling about your experience and how you approach problems, the normal stuff. Then there was a design challenge given by a product designer which had technical difficulties. Then an interview or design challenge with a developer. The reason why I say 'Or' is because I couldn't quite tell if this was a technical challenge, a personality challenge, a problem solving challenge or just the worst most frustrating experience I've ever had with someone in an interview. This individual was looking for a concrete answer but I could not give him what he wanted and instead of moving on or assisting in any way, he just asked the same question in a different scenario in a way that still didn't help. This may have been my own failing, maybe 95% my fault, but I would probably blame my inability at least 50% on the format of the interview. This 4 hour long interview was interviews back to back with no breaks for water, to catch a breath or collect myself at all. I feel like I did relatively well for the format itself, but if I had any sort of take aways from this experience is that if this format is offered to me again. I will stop the process right there. I was rejected in a very nice email. My feedback was probably the vaguest feedback I've received this far along in the interview process. This in and of itself was possibly the most disheartening after a very rigorous interview proces. All of that being said, they are definitely looking for a good fit and I think that they are doing a good job in that respect. My biggest qualm was the final interview. If I am ever part of the hiring process in my position again, I will recommend breaks for the sanity of your candidates because they deserve better.
