      VP People Interview

      Jan 2, 2025
      Anonymous Interview Candidate
      Burlington, MA
      No offer
      Negative experience
      Easy interview

      Application

I applied in-person. I interviewed at Phoenix Tailings (Burlington, MA) in Nov 2024

      Interview

I would echo the review written by another candidate for the VP People role - this company clearly needs to hire for this role asap. I had a very similar interview experience - I met with 4 different people, was brought onsite, did a take home consulting project and took a long tour of the site. Afterwards, I sent standard follow up emails thanking the team for their time (I know how busy startups are and how valuable time can be) and did not receive a single response. No rejection, no follow up, no acknowledgement. I had concerns going into this interview process about working for a company with 4 co-founders and the ability to make decisions with so many stakeholders. If you decide to interview here, be prepared to spend a lot of time and to not hear back.

      Application

I applied online. I interviewed at Phoenix Tailings in Aug 2024

      Interview

Long, drawn out and poorly designed. I can see why they're hiring for this role because they really, really need the help. This was probably the worst candidate experience I've ever had. I started interviewing in early June and finally pulled myself out of the process the last week of August after I spent another 10 minutes sitting alone in a Zoom waiting room waiting for what was supposed to be a 15 minute check in to start. Out of 6 interviews (including an onsite visit that was not given adequate time so it ran well over and one of the C-suite arrived to halfway through it) I don't think a single one started on time (usually 10-15 minutes late for 30 minute meetings) and in one case the interviewer was a no show. Not once did anyone send an email giving a heads up they would be late or unable to make it. Just overall incredibly disrespectful of other people's time. Additionally, they do have a "hustle test" as part of the interview process that is effectively a 10+ hour consulting engagement since you are tasked with solving one of their existing problems. They pay $500 for this exercise (assuming they actually pay you, which based on another review here it seems like you may or may not receive your payment) which is not at all in line with what anyone at this level would be making even as a W-2 contractor, forget about an actual consultant. Companies should either be requesting a presentation of a time you solved a similar problem elsewhere, or properly compensating you for the fact that you're performing actual work for them. The length of the process and unprofessionalism displayed by continually late interviewers combined with the practical portion being effectively a wildly underpaid consulting gig left a really bad impression of the company. I could go on with a number of other red flags, but overall it's pretty clear the C-suite made up of multiple founders doesn't actually know what they're doing as far as running a company. Typical early-stage startup with too many non-business background founders still on the LT that thinks you should be grateful for a chance to interview with them. I would steer clear.
