Three rounds of interviews.
First was with the in-house recruiter who asked me to complete an online personality test, I was assured that this was so that they would have data on how best to manage me should I get the position and wouldn't effect the interview process. I asked about salary which was not stated in the job ad, explaining that I had never had a permanent job in France and was unsure of the salary range, I was told we would discuss it if the process continued.
The second interview was a zoom interview with creative leads from their UK headquarters, these would've been my colleagues as the job was the sole creative in France responsible for the creative outside of the UK, this went well and they both seemed very nice and answered my questions about the company too.
The third interview went well too, very positive interview with the woman I would've been working directly with to work on brand roll-out and marketing. I also met the head of marketing and the interview concluded very positively. Then the HR woman came into the room, closed the door behind her and before sitting down asked me a flurry of questions about my personal life; how many children did I have, how old was my child, what childcare did I have for them. These were not friendly conversational questions and felt quite hostile. She then told me the results of my online test (the one I had been assured wouldn't be used in the hiring process) where I had apparently scored around 95% compatibility with the company, which she simultaneously told me was extremely good, higher than any other candidate, but that I would have to work on my weaknesses. She asked me my salary expectations, I told her an amount which would've been very reasonable and in-line with London salary expectations (the city in which I had been working in before), I caveated this with the reminder that I had not been employed in France before and was unsure of the market rates. She then feigned shock by the amount I said (I don't believe that what I said was really that shocking) and asked me to come back to her the next day with a lower number, she still didn't give me any salary range for the role. The next day I emailed as requested to say that I would be happy to discuss salary but that I would like reassurances that the company wouldn't have issues with me being a mother given the nature of the questioning I had received. She didn't respond to my email. The following Monday I received a call from the internal recruiter to say that I was the selected candidate but that I had asked for too much money and cited an amount significantly higher than I had stated. When I explained that I hadn't said that amount but a lower one and had in fact added that I was happy to discuss salary he seemed a bit confused and said he would get back to me which he never did.
