I was reached out to on LinkedIn asking if I was interested in a role, but they didn't send a link to the job description. When we did connect, I was treated like an applicant (asking generic questions about my background and experience). I had to point out that I didn't know what role they were considering me for, given that they had not sent a job description. Awkwardly at the end of the call they went on for several minutes about how they had recently received a promotion because they were doing so well at the company, which felt a bit out of place given the introductory nature of the call.
When explaining the interview process, they mentioned one would be a technical interview. I asked if it was live coding, conversational, exercise, etc. They said "that's a good question! I don't know." Also odd they didn't know the depth of the interview loop they were in charge of, but told me they would get back to me later - they never did so I went into that call blind.
I made it through the entire interview loop, and in the final interview with the last member on the team, his internet connection cut out. I stayed on the call for over 15 minutes but they did not rejoin. I didn't hear anything from anyoen at the company until I emailed them and told them there appeared to be issues and asked what they wanted to do next. They had to reschedule the interview for 4 days later - the lack of urgency surprised me, given that this was the final touch point. Additionally, when scheduling, I asked for feedback from the process thus far so if there were any questions or concerns I could address them - that went completely ignored.
After the rescheduled call, I was told I'd hear back "very shortly" because they were eager to hire quickly. I didn't hear anything back for nearly another week. When I finally got a message from them saying they didn't have an update and wouldn't have one for another 2 weeks - which seemed absurd to me to have a candidate wait 3+ weeks after completing an entire interview loop to be given a decision. When I replied to their message, I got an automated Out of Office message.
Finally, after another 2 weeks (now 3 weeks after the last interview) I asked for an update. I received a call the next day awkwardly explaining they extended an offer to another candidate more than a week ago. I asked why no one could have told me last week and they said they discussing possibly opening another another role for me; however, when I asked for feedback, they told me the team felt I was not experienced enough for the current role. Naturally I asked why they would be considering me for another role if I wasn't experienced enough for this one, and they awkwardly tripped over their words and did not have a good explanation. This contradiction strongly implied to me that at least one part of her statement was untruthful.
Overall I felt like this process was a colossal waste of my time and I was unable to conclude with any reliable information. I'm disappointed because all of my conversations with the hiring team were really good. Ultimately, this was a very poor representation of the company through awful preparation (lacking answers to simple questions, and never following up despite saying they would) and is 100% the cause for my negative experience. At nearly every point of communication, I felt like they dropped the ball for providing positive candidate experience at least once. The irony about how the first conversation concluded by unabashedly bragging about how good they were at their job is not lost on me.
Progyny, do better if you care about your reputation.
