      Senior Software Engineer Interview

      Nov 18, 2022
      Anonymous Interview Candidate
      Vilnius
      No offer
      Negative experience
      Average interview

      Application

I applied through a recruiter. The process took 4 weeks. I interviewed at Sonar (Vilnius) in Oct 2022

      Interview

The interview consisted three steps (apart from recruiter call): 1. 30 min chat with an engineer about some Java fundamentals. 2. 3 hours technical assessment - work on a problem together with two engineers in iterations. Very enjoyable. 3. 2 hours psychological torture (culture/values) interview with HR (who call themselves people and culture gardeners). Up until the third step, the feedback came within hours and the next round was arranged. However, HR took more than a week to get back and they replied that "feedback is very important to them" and "that's why they say exactly why they rejected a candidate". And the reason was (hold your breath) - "specific communication at Sonar". What? Another thing to note - the recruiter was aware that I'm working remotely and have no intention to work from their Geneva office. They said that the team is totally fine with that, but then after the second technical interview, after I received very positive feedback from the engineers, I was invited to another call. There I got a warning that in the final step (which was supposed to be the offer call with their CEO), the CEO would pester me about how "remote doesn't work" and how "everyone should be working from the office", but I was told to just ignore that rant because "he's like that". That's "people and culture" for you! What a waste of time.

      Interview questions [1]

      Question 1

First part: equals/hashCode contract, some general Java chat that I can't recall - basics really Second part: Build a small interpreter for a subset of arithmetic expressions. Sounds tough, but the problem space is constrained enough that it's pretty straightforward if you know a bit how compilers work. The engineers are also very friendly and helpful throughout this step. Third part: For 2 hours HR reads questions like "tell me about a time you had a crisis at work and how you dealt with it" from the screen. Whenever I asked a clarifying question, they just read the same scripted question again. Feels like they don't understand what they're asking themselves and it's some scripted framework they evaluate your answers/reactions against.

      Application

I applied online. I interviewed at Sonar (Ankara) in Jun 2026

      Interview

I had a really disappointing experience with SonarSource’s hiring process. I completed the Codility assessment, then had the first interview, and after that I was invited to a second technical interview, which took place on June 17. After the interview I followed up on June 24 and was told that feedback would be shared shortly. Then on July 9, I received an email saying I was “halfway there” and that only a few candidates make it that far. They invited me to the next step, a 2-hour technical interview, and asked me to send 5+ availability options. I replied the same day with several time slots for the following weeks. After that, I received no response. The dates I had shared passed, so after waiting 10 days, I sent another email on July 19 with updated availability and specifically asked them to confirm receipt so we could schedule properly. Again, there was no scheduling confirmation or clear update. Then on July 22, I was told that another candidate had reached the final interview stage and that they were pausing my process. I fully understand that a company can choose another candidate, that is not the problem. The problem is being told I progressed, being asked to provide availability for the next stage, then being left waiting without proper communication while the process moved forward with someone else. I invested time in the Codility test and multiple interviews, and the lack of transparency made the experience feel unfair and very frustrating. The people I spoke with during the interviews were professional, but the recruiting coordination and communication were really poor.

      Interview

Interview process is very well structured. But there are so many rounds.. like 5 to 6 rounds. There is one 3 hrs coding round without any break. Other than that everything was very good and it was really an informative session

      Anonymous employee
      Accepted offer
      Positive experience
      Easy interview

      Application

I applied online. The process took 5 weeks. I interviewed at Sonar in Nov 2025

      Interview

I've interviewed in October-December 2025. The whole process took ~ 5 weeks. It included 6 interviews (2 of them mostly technical) and 2 additional online tests. Despite so many interviews I felt rather relaxed and enjoyed the experience. All interviewers were very friendly and pleasant. The cool thing is that they changed the process and now they suggest several short behavioral interviews with different people. I liked it!

      Interview questions [1]

      Question 1

Rather standard q-s like: - Why do you want to join us? - Tell about disagreement. - How would you described by the people from your last companies? As well as some "check" questions about milestones in my CV.
