From the day I first applied to the day I got an email saying they were “hoping to know more in the next week or two” just shy of FOUR months had passed. (Spoiler: They did not reach out in one or two weeks or ever bother to contact me again.) After a very brief call there was a technical challenge that they used to weed out 90% of applicants. It took more than half a week of workday hours; we were told to take our time and “have fun with it”. I don’t normally do free work for fun, and it was not paid (FYI Ubiquiti, that is something that good companies do). A little over week after submitting the technical project I started to wonder if there were a problem because there was no response or any indication it was received. They eventually replied to my email saying they were still reviewing it. Three weeks after submitting I was invited to have a quick call. It was nothing I would describe as a full interview and lasted less than ten minutes. There was a salary discussion, and they managed to avoid naming a range even after I said I preferred not to give the initial number and directly asked what their range was. (I eventually named a number at the lower end of what Glassdoor identified as their range, and was told that they would likely be able to work with that.) They said that I and one other person out of 13 or 14 applicants had passed the technical challenge. After another brief conversation I was invited to come into the office to see if it was a good “culture fit.” The office visit included a bit of a wait and an assistant giving me a tour of their ghost town of an office. They might not have said “you’re hired” but I walked out of there with a strong impression that they would be sending the paperwork the next day. Phrases like “this is where you’ll sit”, claims that people with my kinds of experiences do really well at Ubiquity, vocalizing extreme excitement about me as a hire, indicating that they were running it up the line and that I’d get an email tomorrow (I thought he meant the paperwork). When the follow up email never came, I realized I had been gaslit into thinking I had the job when they were actually stringing me along. I noticed later that I was not the first person that was led to believe they were hired when they were not (thanks Glassdoor!) Glassdoor reviewers also indicate a pattern of employees being coerced into writing fake reviews to boost their ratings.
